Adding two handÂfuls of nuts to the daily diet of men in a recent 14-week clinÂiÂcal trial improved sexÂual funcÂtion, parÂticÂuÂlarly orgasÂmic funcÂtion and sexÂual desire. The study, which included 83 healthy males aged 18 – 35, found that nut conÂsumpÂtion, along with a stanÂdard Western-style diet, sigÂnifÂiÂcantly enhanced sexÂual funcÂtion comÂpared to a conÂtrol group not eatÂing nuts.
Men who parÂticÂiÂpated in a recent 14-week clinÂiÂcal trial reported that adding two handÂfuls of nuts to their daily diet improved sexÂual funcÂtion.
Eighty-three healthy males aged between 18 and 35 years old parÂticÂiÂpated in the study. Outside of eatÂing nuts, they parÂtook of a stanÂdard Western-style diet. This diet is traÂdiÂtionÂally low in proÂduce and high in aniÂmal fats.
Including nuts in a regÂuÂlar diet sigÂnifÂiÂcantly improved auto-reported orgasÂmic funcÂtion and sexÂual desire.
“Compared to the conÂtrol group, a sigÂnifÂiÂcant increase in the orgasÂmic funcÂtion and sexÂual desire was observed durÂing the nut interÂvenÂtion,” researchers wrote in the study. “Including nuts in a regÂuÂlar diet sigÂnifÂiÂcantly improved auto-reported orgasÂmic funcÂtion and sexÂual desire.”
This study comÂpared two groups of men. One group, comÂprised of 43 ranÂdomly selected parÂticÂiÂpants, added daily conÂsumpÂtion of speÂcific nuts to their Western-style diet. They ate 60 grams of almonds, hazelÂnuts and walÂnuts daily, roughly two handÂfuls. The other group, of 40 men, ate the same diet but withÂout the addiÂtion of supÂpleÂmenÂtal nuts.
Two sources of data were used to assess changes in erecÂtile funcÂtion: parÂticÂiÂpant answers in quesÂtionÂnaires and bioÂmarkÂers in blood samÂples.

This recent trial used the same data but instead shifted the focus of the research. It narÂrowed in on quesÂtions of how nut conÂsumpÂtion affects sexÂual and erecÂtile funcÂtion.
A numÂber of studÂies have also linked the Mediterranean diet and conÂsumpÂtion of difÂferÂent types of nuts and olive oil to a lower risk of Erectile Dysfunction (ED) and other sexÂual dysÂfuncÂtion. Research conÂducted in 2018 by the University of Athens sugÂgests that regÂuÂlar conÂsumpÂtion of olive oil could improve men’s sexÂual funcÂtion by improvÂing their full-body cirÂcuÂlaÂtion.
Some of these studÂies have also linked such diets to improveÂments in endotheÂlial funcÂtion. In the walls of blood vesÂsels, the endotheÂlium helps to mainÂtain a balÂance between dilaÂtion and conÂtracÂtion. Research findÂings sugÂgest that eatÂing nuts can also benÂeÂfit endotheÂlial funcÂtion, which is what may improve sexÂual funcÂtion.
Yet another recent study showed a link between eatÂing pisÂtaÂchios and improved sexÂual funcÂtion in men. This is thought to be because pisÂtaÂchios, like many other nuts, conÂtain antioxÂiÂdants and argiÂnine. Arginine is a preÂcurÂsor of nitric oxide, which is a comÂpound that increases vasodiÂlaÂtion.
The researchers from the study have called for furÂther and larger studÂies to conÂfirm these findÂings. They are hopeÂful that furÂther research can help to disÂcover and explore the mechÂaÂnisms that explain why nut conÂsumpÂtion and the Mediterranean diet have this effect.
