Jaén, Andalusia
Jaén, located in Andalusia, Spain, is the largest proÂducer of olive oil in the world, proÂducÂing 40% of Spain’s outÂput and 25% of the global supÂply. The region is known for its high-qualÂity, extra virÂgin olive oil proÂduced from the Picual variÂety of olive. The local olive oil indusÂtry has a long hisÂtory and traÂdiÂtion, with olive trees being grown in the area for thouÂsands of years.
In all, olive oil shipÂments comÂprised 72.6 perÂcent of the regional exports, a 5.4 perÂcent decrease from the preÂviÂous seaÂson and a 2.8 perÂcent increase from the last five seaÂsons’ averÂage.
Andalusia also exported 69.3 perÂcent of the olive oil proÂduced by local millers, with an averÂage price of €3.61 per kiloÂgram. 55.5 perÂcent of those exports went to European Union memÂber counÂtries, with Italy absorbÂing 26.5 perÂcent of the overÂall Andalusia exports.

Between 2019/2020 and 2021/2022, olive oil conÂsumpÂtion in Andalusia per capita dropped from 8.3 to 7.2 kiloÂgrams per year. The national per capita conÂsumpÂtion dropped from 8.7 to 7.4 kiloÂgrams per year durÂing the same timeÂframe.
The obserÂvaÂtory anaÂlysts interÂpret these trends as returnÂing to norÂmal after the conÂsumpÂtion surge trigÂgered by the COVID-19 epiÂdemic and the assoÂciÂated lockÂdowns. During the 2017/2018 and 2018/2019 camÂpaigns, Andalusia olive oil per capita conÂsumpÂtion reached 7.5 and 7.2 kilos yearly.
The obserÂvaÂtory also cerÂtiÂfied that the storÂage capacÂiÂties at the end of the 2021/2022 camÂpaign were 453,758 tons.
Finally, the new 2021/2022 report stressed the sigÂnifÂiÂcant growth of the olive-growÂing areas in the region. Between 2013 and 2022, olive farmÂland grew from 1,541,109 to 1,639,627 hectares.
