Moroccan olive oil exports by volÂume have douÂbled in the first eight months of 2022 comÂpared to the preÂviÂous year.
According to the latÂest data from the Ministry of Agriculture, the overÂall value of exports also grew 47 perÂcent, reachÂing MAD 456 milÂlion (€42.3 milÂlion).
The minÂistry said export volÂumes had been posÂiÂtively affected by risÂing interÂnaÂtional demand for olive oil.

The International Olive Council (IOC) estiÂmates that Morocco will export 28,000 tons of olive oil in the 2021/22 crop year, which runs from October to September.
The minÂistry noted how European Union counÂtries had been the priÂmary purÂchasers of Moroccan olive oil, with sales risÂing by 220 perÂcent in volÂumes and 260 perÂcent in value.
The minÂistry added that olive pomace oil exports also have grown by 140 perÂcent in the first eight months of the curÂrent year, with trade value exceedÂing MAD 212 milÂlion (€19.7 milÂlion).
Olive oil and pomace oil exports to European Union counÂtries grew steadily from 2016 to 2019, risÂing from 17,256 tons to 37,158. However, volÂumes dropped to 11,180 tons in the 2019/20 crop year. Of those, extra virÂgin olive oil accounted for 6,017 tons.
According to the minÂistry, Morocco proÂduced 1.96 milÂlion tons of olives in the 2021/22 crop year, an increase of 21 perÂcent comÂpared with the preÂviÂous one.
Rising proÂducÂtion figÂures are the fruit of the long-term plan for olive growÂing expanÂsion in the counÂtry, which is quickly becomÂing one of the most relÂeÂvant olive oil proÂducÂers outÂside of Europe.
Domestic olive oil conÂsumpÂtion has also increased conÂsidÂerÂably recently, risÂing from 100,000 tons in 2010/11 to 150,000 tons expected in the curÂrent seaÂson.
After proÂducÂing 200,000 tons of olive oil in the 2021/22 crop year, the curÂrent camÂpaign is unlikely to yield the same results.
Moroccan olive farms have borne the conÂseÂquences of the severe drought and heat waves, with the two most promiÂnent olive-proÂducÂing regions expectÂing steep proÂducÂtion drops in 2022/23.
