The head of the olive oil secÂtor at the European Commission announced that olive oil exports from the European Union are expected to conÂtinue growÂing, with estiÂmates showÂing a potenÂtial increase to over one milÂlion tons by 2030. Despite chalÂlenges such as comÂpeÂtiÂtion from other crops and water availÂabilÂity issues, the E.U. is expected to see a rise in organic olive growÂing and increased proÂducÂtion, with Spain, Italy, and Portugal remainÂing key proÂducÂing counÂtries.
According to the head of the olive oil secÂtor at the European Commission, the final proÂducÂtion and trade figÂures from the European Union for the 2020/21 crop year conÂfirm a growÂing trend.
Gabriel Vigil told a meetÂing of the International Olive Council that exports, which reached 634,000 tons in 2020/21, are desÂtined to accelÂerÂate. He added that the E.U. proÂduced 2.05 tons of olive oil in the preÂviÂous crop year.
According to the latÂest E.U. estiÂmates, the interÂnaÂtional olive oil trade will not stop growÂing until at least 2030.

Between 2022 and 2030, E.U. olive oil exports are estiÂmated to exceed one milÂlion tons, nearly 40 perÂcent above the rolling five-year averÂage (717,900 tons).
While speakÂing at the IOC conÂferÂence in Tbilisi, Georgia, Vigil explained how the growth of olive oil imports in the E.U. will flatÂten from the next seaÂson on while proÂducÂtion should reach almost 2.5 milÂlion tons by 2030.
Vigil noted that less than six milÂlion hectares within the E.U. are devoted to olive growÂing, and this figÂure was unlikely to increase much in the comÂing years.
He attribÂuted this to comÂpeÂtiÂtion comÂing from other crops and the chalÂlenges related to water availÂabilÂity. Still, Vigil added, the share of irriÂgated olive groves is increasÂing steadily, conÂfirmÂing the growÂing relÂeÂvance of high-denÂsity and super-high-denÂsity olive groves in the future of proÂducÂtion.
As the trend toward modÂern olive growÂing conÂtinÂues, olive growÂing in the E.U. is expected to be increasÂingly organic with the abilÂity to anticÂiÂpate the harÂvest and curÂtail pests and pathogens while increasÂing qualÂity.
Spain and Italy are expected to remain the most relÂeÂvant proÂducÂing counÂtries in the E.U., but Vigil added that Portugal is expected to see the largest proÂducÂtion increases, a rise of three perÂcent by 2030 comÂpared with 2019.
While the E.U. is expected to deliver 2.92 milÂlion of the 3.11 milÂlion tons of olive oil expected to be proÂduced globÂally in 2021/22, the 27-memÂber state is also seeÂing its olive oil conÂsumpÂtion slow
According to Vigil, conÂsumpÂtion dropped from 1.79 milÂlion tons in 2011/12 to the 1.46 milÂlion tons foreÂcasted for the curÂrent seaÂson.
He warned that the future of the global olive oil trade is conÂnected to the abilÂity of the secÂtor to overÂcome seriÂous chalÂlenges such as cliÂmate change and the growÂing role of non‑E.U. olive oil proÂducÂers, includÂing Tunisia, Egypt and Turkey.
However, Vigil conÂcluded that opporÂtuÂniÂties lie in changÂing global conÂsumer behavÂior, which is increasÂingly favorÂable to olive oil.
